'Set yourself Free' Art Journal Page - Mixed Media & Art

Hello friends,

I have been in a scrapbooking jinx off late, so all of this month have been playing in my art journals. My inspiration for this page came from listening to this video  of Oprah Winfrey while going through challenge blogs and scrapbook blogs.

Linking this to Mixed Media & Art . From the sketch Ive adopted circle elements - drawing & stamping stitched circles with journalling around them and the broken cage complements the circular shape too. Ive also used the hanging cage element from the moodboard and used it on my page. Instead of birds with wings, my page has a cage with wings symbolic of freedom.

"You get in life what you have the courage to ask for." 
Although Oprah's speech wasnt poetry, this quote stayed with me .....we have made so many rules and boundaries in our minds of what's acceptable or not, we need to break those first.... start with finding who we truly are!

After making the background with lots of handwritten positive affirmations and messages to myself, I started layering some very beautiful 2crafty chipboard pieces and each of these pieces were chosen to add meaning to the message I was journaling. As always, all the chipboard pieces were given a coat of white gesso. To color them, I used different techniques as explained below.

The lattice leaves were used to represent fresh ideas & new life being born. I used these lattice leaves on both pages after colouring them with 2 different green stamp pads.  

 Next, I coloured a piece of Ella's Border and the Pretty Birdcage pink & purple and then dabbed some white gesso with a sponge. The dainty Ella's border signifies to me the delicate yet strong spirit of a woman. The broken cage is quiet self explanatory - breaking free from rules, fears, habits and could mean different things to each of us.

 Finally, The Winged Heart 2 was painted with metallic gold paint and again a tiny dab of white gesso and tucked under the fussy cut cage.

Its been a while since I posted here on my blog. 

Ive mostly been on Instagram & YouTube these past few months.

Earlier this month, I came across this moodboard at 7dots studio and was wanted to use these beautiful colours on a project. A couple of days after that, my friend and I had a conversation about how intuitive Mother Nature is and if only we could also reconnect with our intuition the same way. These were my thoughts when I set about creating this art journal page.

Its been 5 years since I was last in Europe but I still remember those beautiful, huge doors we saw all over Austria & France.  Ooh la la those vintage colours & textures! That's what inspired me to try and recreate a window on an old wall.

I've always loved butterflies.

They remind me never to lose hope........

that something very beautiful can emerge out of something that's falling apart.

So, how does one become a butterfly?

You must want to fly so much, that you are willing to give up being a caterpillar.

Within you is the power to rise above any situation or struggle, and transform into the Brightest, Strongest version of you ever! 

This was the journaling that went on a piece of 4 X 4 canvas and became the background for this journal page.

Its been 3 long months of constant challenges, perseverance and steadfastness to remain positive despite odds and through this time my art journal has helped me de-stress immensely. So, when I found a bit of time, I wanted to film this page and share it with all of you.

Today, my project is an Art Journal page made for Words and Paintery September reveal.

You can make any mixed media project to participate in this challenge. Use both the wording & colours to inspire your work.

 

This is another spread in my altered book which is a collection of memories and letters for my kids. So, it was only apt to have something about our everyday life. This is definitely one of the most satisfying and meaningful pieces of work I've done this month.

I found a whole heap gratitude journalling prompts on Pinterest and chose one that worked for me. The left page has a shaker sleeve made with WRMK fuse tool attached on one side. Underneath it are the remaining two sentences : "I felt joyful when..." & "My favourite part was..." and a small note for my kids about finding delight in everyday moments like a morning cuddle, an unexpected kiss or a quiet afternoon in the park.

(Tutorial) Art journal - Colourarte Primary Elements pigments

Hello friends,

I'm on the Colourarte blog today with a step by step to make this art journal page using primary elements pigments, silks and radiant gels.

 I love the shimmer that all the colourarte products have. Not overly shiny for a grungy project like the one Ive made but shiny enough to make the teal look like a tiny jewels.

This project was an eye opener for me on so many levels. I love texture in all my projects and was so blown away with what can be achieved with paints and mediums - no 3d elements. For a long time I wanted to add one of Finns rusted wheels in the centre, add glass beads and glitter and what not! I really liked this idea too, but eventually settled for an embossed butterfly.

 Learn to live another day I suppose :)

Art journal illustration - Words & Paintery

Hello peeps,

Happy happy day today. Kids are back at school and finally found time to sit on my laptop and edit photos and videos.

The first piece I want to share is my DT inspiration as part of the Words & Paintery Team.  I love the reason behind this blog challenge and being a mixed media lover at heart, I really wanted to be part of this community and am very thankful to Marie Johansson for giving me this opportunity.

Considering how cold it has been here, I'm quite happy to be creating layouts about the beach and sunshine :) This journal entry started off with a collage on a piece of canvas, gesso on top and images from the Graphics Fairy. This site offers plenty plenty of free printables that you can use in your artwork.

The challenge starts mid month so you have until 15th of August to submit your entry.

Journey - Art journal page with tutorial

Hello friends,

Today I want to share with you all an art journal page with a step by step tutorial.  The last few days have been quite eventful, pushing me out of my comfort zone on many levels and I wanted to relax and internalise what had happened in order to make the right decisions. I also wanted to clear my head before making a project for the Colourarte Design team audition, so I took out my art journal and played with my current favourites - lace, metal, twinks, arte pigments. On finishing, it felt right to make this journal page my submission for the colourarte design team audition.

Its a rather long post as I have a step by step pictorial of how I made this page. Hope you enjoy.

 Step1: Cover the two sides with teal acrylic paint. Tear out the roses from a paper napkin and glue onto paper (with matt medium) once acrylic paint is completely dry.

Step 2: Add a piece of cotton tape and lace on the left side and some texture paste through a stencil. On the right side (ART stencil) mix sand texture with texture paste and apply. Sand texture has a grainy feel as opposed to the relatively smooth finish from texture paste.

 Step3: Add water to a pot of Chiffon pink twinkling H20. Don't wait too long, pick up a little bit of paint with a waterbrush and apply on the word ART in random places. On a craft mat, take a little Spiced pumpkin pigment and apply to the ART word and also the left side of the page.

 Step 4: The colour on the word ART takes time to dry as the paint seeps through the texture of the sand paste. Before its completely dry, using a brush apply gesso. The gesso will pull some of the colour from the word and create an interesting effect. I used heavy body gesso without any water, dragging the brush over and over again in order to give a white washed effect. Dry thoroughly. Dip your waterbrush into the pot of Chiffon pink twinkling H20, dab it onto a piece of plastic and press the paint side onto the page. The paint will flow in random ways, some areas with more paint, some with less, but overall give a beautiful effect.

Step 5: Glue on some more of the roses from the paper napkin. Dry it. Apply clear crackle paste in a few places on the page and create a layer of tea bag and lace on top of the wet paste on the left side. On the right side the screws were glued to the crackle paste as well. This is the most time consuming step as crackle medium takes a long time to dry. Using a heat tool will result in small or no cracks so patience it the key.

 Step 6: Now if the my favourite part of the page: glazing. Add a tiny (really tiny) amount of Cinnamon Brown pigment with glazing medium. How shiny and wonderful it looks - just like rust as shown in 6b. Apply with a flat brush on part of the page. Leave it for a few seconds, rub out the excess with a dry kitchen roll first and then with a wet wipe. Can you see the subtle colour in 6d compared to no colour in 6a. Heat set. Repeat if you want stronger colour.

 Step 7: Glue down die cuts on the left and stamp with archival ink. Repeat the glazing process with teal acrylic and with pink acrylic. Here you can see teal acrylic paint mixed with glazing medium applied to a few random places on the page. After this I wiped it back just as described in Step 6.

Here is a look at the final page again.

Finishing touches include splatter of brown glaze and pink glaze and some glass glitter and beads around the lady silhouette. You can see it better in this close up.
